Yellow Ducklings

"So what's with the yellow ducklings?" my friend asked. "None of the ducklings I've seen are yellow." She is familiar with many wild duck species, including mallards, wood ducks and mergansers. After some research we discovered that the yellow ducklings that have inspired rubber duckies and all manner of homey decorations are baby Pekin ducks. The White Pekin, originally from China, are bred to have yellow babies and pure white adults.

Pekin duckling by Mark MalagiseFeatherSite: Pekin Ducks - Lots of photos of Pekin ducks, and waaaay down at the bottom of the page you will find a couple of great pictures of fluffy yellow ducklings. (See photo right.)

Metzer Farms Duck and Goose Hatchery - This duck and goose hatchery features a cute picture of four bright yellow ducklings on its home page, and lots of information about domestic duck breeds. If they say your breed is a "good egg layer and forager" you may have a long and happy life ahead of you. But if your breed is listed as "excellent for meat production", my advice is to flap your little wings and get the heck outa there!
